Singapore PM launches cybersecurity strategy

Xinhua, October 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday launched the country's cybersecurity strategy.

The strategy, launched at the opening of inaugural Singapore International Cyber Week (SICW), outlines how Singapore will continue to strengthen resilience of its cybersecurity.

Prime Minister Lee said "while infocomm technologies (ICT) brings about opportunities, it also make us vulnerable".

He noted that cyber threats and attacks are becoming more frequent and sophisticated with more severe consequences, and Singapore has also been targeted. That's the why Singapore needs to coordinate efforts and develop the strategy on cybersecurity.

After a consultation process with 50 stakeholders over the past year, the strategy sets out Singapore's vision, goals and priorities and outlines the country's commitment to build a resilient and trusted cyber environment for Singapore and Singaporeans.

Lee said the strategy has four key components, namely building a resilient infrastructure, creating a safer cyberspace, developing a vibrant cybersecurity ecosystem and strengthening international partnerships.

On critical infrastructure, PM Lee expounded that Singapore will invest more of the ICT budget to strengthen government system and networks, especially those that handle sensitive data, and protect them from cyber-attacks. Operators of essential services will develop robust cyber risk management frameworks and responses.

PM Lee revealed that Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) will work together with the businesses and individuals. He mentioned that CSA will issue regular advisories to businesses on imminent cyber-attacks and emerging cyber threats, and the authority will also provide technical guides and self-help cybersecurity checklist.

Lee added that Singapore is growing cybersecurity capabilities with a series of programs to train more cybersecurity professionals.

As cyber threats are borderless and attacks can come from anywhere in the world, the importance of cooperation with other countries to respond to cyber threats stands out. PM Lee underscored international cooperation in his opening remarks.

"We are working with other governments to share intelligence, work together to block attacks, and to learn good practices form one another," said PM Lee.

"We will strengthen our partnership with ASEAN. With closer ASEAN integration, we are much more inter-connected than before and cybersecurity cooperation will help us protect our supranational information infrastructures."

Organized by CSA, the inaugural SICW attracts about 3,000 political leaders, government and policy decision-makers, industry players and participants.

Themed "Building a secure and resilient digital future through partnership", the three-day SICW brings conference and exhibition such as GovernmentWare, ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cybersecurity, International Cyber Leaders' Symposium and Smart Nation IoT Security Conference together. Endit
