Tonga charges 7 Georgians over passport forgery

Xinhua, October 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Seven Georgian nationals who had arrived in Tonga with allegedly stolen Greek passports were arrested and charged Monday with dealing with forged documents, local news website Matangi Tonga reported.

The seven accused reportedly arrived in Tonga on Sept. 22. Acting Police Commissioner Viliami 'Unga Fa'aoa said while executing a search warrant at their accommodation, police arrested the suspects and also seized seven Georgian passports, which are believed to be their genuine identity documents.

A police investigation started on Sept. 29 after the matter was referred from the New Zealand Immigration Office, said the report.

Tonga Police then engaged with Interpol and confirmed that the Greek passports were reported to have been stolen earlier this year and had been altered with false identities.

The investigation continues, police said. Endit
