Hollande denounces "intolerable" police attack near Paris, pledges to arrest perpetrators

Xinhua, October 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

French President Francois Hollande on Saturday denounced an "unspeakable and intolerable" Molotov cocktail attack against police officers who were on surveillance mission in Viry-Chatillon, southern Paris, the president's office said in a press release.

"The assault against four policemen... is unspeakable and intolerable because it endangered the lives of officers whose job was to protect the population," French president said.

"Everything will be done to find the perpetrators of this attack and bring them to justice so they receive a sentence in keeping with the severity of their crime," he added.

Two policemen on surveillance mission in Viry-Chatillon were badly burnt on Saturday afternoon after some individuals hurled incendiary bombs at them before running away, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a separate statement.

Cazeneuve added two other officers called to back their colleagues, were slightly wounded.

When the attack took place, the burnt policemen were keeping surveillance on a camera, which was installed in the main crossroads of the city to monitor gangs of traffickers, according to television channel BFMTV.

Last weekend, police clashed with young men who tried to destroy the camera, it added. Endit
