Update: 4 militants killed in northern Algeria in counter-terrorism operation

Xinhua, October 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Algerian defense ministry said on Friday that its troops killed four militants in northern Algeria, as part of the ongoing counter-terrorism operation.

The ministry said the four were killed in Azeffoun in northern province of Tizi Ouzou, some 120 km southeast of the capital Algiers, while four Kalashnikov machine guns were retrieved.

It said the operation is still underway, which could lead to killing more militants.

On Thursday, army troops killed a terrorist in the dense forests of Boumerdes province, near Tizi Ouzou. The terrorist was on the wanted list for joining terrorist groups in 1994.

A few militants affiliated to al-Qaida in the Maghreb region and Islamic State (IS) affiliate group of Caliphate Soldiers are still taking refuge in the woods of Tizi Ouzou and its adjacent provinces east of Algiers.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats. Endit
