Iran defeats Uzbekistan 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

Iran beat Uzbekistan 1-0 in Tashkent on Thursday in the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

A header by centre-back Jalal Hosseini in the 27 minutes sent Carlos Queiroz's men to the top of group A with seven points.

"I think we deserved this victory," Queiroz said. "Uzbekistan could not create many chances, and they did not perform as expected."

"I congratulate my team on this result, but the competitions for the World cup will continue and we need more points," the Portuguese said.

On Thursday, South Korea defeated Qatar 3-2 and Syria gained a surprise 1-0 victory against China in Beijing.

After three rounds of matches, Iran and South Korea have bagged 7 points in group A, with Iran leading the group with goal difference. Uzbekistan is at the third place with 6 points. Endit
