A Singaporean arrested for involvement in terrorism-related activities was issued with a Restriction Order (RO) for a period of two years in August, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Thursday.
MHA said Asrul bin Alias, a technician, is a supporter of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS). In 2014, he perused online materials on the conflict in Syria and encountered pro-IS materials and subsequently became influenced by the terrorist group's propaganda.
Asrul,33, had actively looked up pro-IS materials and shared them on social media with the intention of spreading the IS radical ideology. In his support for IS, Asrul also countered criticisms of IS which he came across online, the MHA added.
In late 2015 or early 2016, Asrul stopped posting pro-IS and pro-militant materials after warnings from a family member and a close friend. However, he remained supportive of IS and continued to consume IS-related materials online.
MHA said he will undergo religious counselling while on RO.
A person issued with a RO must abide by several conditions and restrictions. For example, he is not permitted to change his residence or employment, or travel out of Singapore, without the prior approval of the Director of the Internal Security Department. Endit
