UAE's DP World launches biggest solar rooftop project in Mideast

Xinhua, October 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dubai Ports (DP) World said on Wednesday it will install 88,000 solar panels on its facilities across Dubai, the biggest such project in the Middle East.

The phase one will be completed in 2017 with a total capacity of 22 megawatts, DP World said in a statement.

Another two phases will follow with further solar installations due in the Dubai's Jebel Ali Free Port Zone and the port of Mina Rashid, it added.

"With 77 marine and inland terminals in over 40 countries, there is significant scope for DP World to implement the learnings from this project across its operations," the port operator said.

"This landmark initiative will have major environmental benefits, and we are pleased to contribute to Dubai's Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 as well as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) vision 2021 for a sustainable environment," DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said.

Dubai's Integrated Energy Strategy seeks to reduce energy demand by 30 percent by 2030.

The UAE vision 2021 for a sustainable environment, launched by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to increase the share of clean energy across the Gulf Arab state, a major oil supplier, to 27 percent by 2021.

DP World said this solar scheme is one of the largest initiatives to be implemented under the recently launched Shams (Arabic for sun) Dubai program launched by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

DP World has appointed Green Energy Tomorrow, Phanes Group's rooftop solar specialist, to deliver the solar panels on its warehouses, office buildings and car parks.

The Swiss Phanes Group has executed solar plant capacity across 23 projects in six countries, according to the firm's website. Endit
