Australian Morrison wins 2016 Qiantang surfing crown

Xinhua, October 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dean Morrison of Australia won the 2016 Qiantang River surfing crown on Tuesday as he scored the highest of 9.75 points among a dozen surfers from five countries.

Two Chinese participants failed to advance to the final, but they were still winning praise from other surfers and referees. "Comparing to last year, they made great progress," said referee Mike Downey.

Famous for its tides in Spring, Qiantang River is becoming a popular destination for surfing with the most unusual wave in the world, and the first Qiantang surfing contest was held in December 2013.

Surfing are among the five sports included to the competition schedule of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The others are baseball/softball, karate, skateboard and sports climbing. Endit
