Xinhua, October 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nine people were killed and three others seriously injured when a vehicle in which they were traveling overturned several times in Zambia's Kitwe city, the Times of Zambia reported Tuesday.

The accident happened on Sunday night along a divided highway and was caused by overspeeding, Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga said.

Nine passengers, including five women, were killed on the spot, while three others were rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries, she said.

Frequent road accidents have become a a drain on public resources in the African country. The government spent about 760,000 U.S. dollars on road-related expenditures in 2015.

Authorities have expressed concern and called for lasting solutions to deal with the road killings. Endi
