The Pentagon said on Tuesday a U.S. service member was killed in Afghanistan during a counterterrorism operation against the extremist group Islamic State.

"The service member was killed conducting operations with Afghan forces when the patrol triggered an Improvised Explosive Device," according to a Pentagon statement.

Speaking here at a news briefing, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the military operation was conducted as a part of a larger U.S.-Afghan counterterrorism mission against IS in the country.

No other casualties in the incident was reported at the moment, he added.

After ending the combat mission at the end of 2014, the United States now maintains 9,800 troops in Afghanistan, focusing on training, advising and assisting local Afghan forces.

According to data offered by the U.S. military, 1,832 U.S. service members have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001. Enditem
