Urgent: 5.5-magnitude quake strikes Japan's southern Chichijima region: JMA

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck Japan's Chichijima region, the country's weather agency said Tuesday evening.

The quake struck the island, located north of Iwo Jima and the largest of the southern Ogasawara archipelago, which are also known as Bonin Islands, at 11:01 p.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The island is within the political boundaries of Ogasawara Town in the Ogasawara subprefecture of Tokyo.

The small island of just 24 square kilometers, is populated by some 2,000 people. Endit
