EU, Afghanistan reach arrangement to tackle migration issues

Xinhua, October 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union and Afghanistan reached a political arrangement to tackle migration issues, according to an EU statement Monday.

"This is the result of a constructive dialogue based on partnership and a willingness to enhance dialogue and bilateral cooperation in this area," said the statement, without disclosing details.

It said that a dialogue at the level of senior officials from two sides will take place on Tuesday to begin the implementation process.

Refugees from Afghanistan make up the second-largest group of migrants in Europe, following Syrians. The number of Afghan asylum-seekers in Europe in 2015 has almost quadrupled to 178,200.

The Brussels Conference on Afghanistan will be co-hosted by the EU and Afghanistan on Wednesday, mainly focusing on the topics of international support to Afghan peace, state-building and development and Afghan reform efforts. Endit
