Portuguese president calls for improving trade figures

Xinhua, September 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called for improving the country's import and export figures on Wednesday.

"Any progress is circumstantial or will be structural but in the very long term if there is no economic growth," Rebelo de Sousa said.

He added it was vital to attract more investors through long and medium-term strategies. This could be achieved by investing in information technology, in telecommunications and in the production of content for media, he pointed out.

The Portuguese national institute of statistics recently revealed that exports rose by 3.7 percent in 2015 compared to 2014, and imports grew 2.2 percent.

The International Monetary Fund has warned that the country is facing a slowdown and expects 1 percent GDP growth this year, as investor confidence remains affected by anti-austerity policies. Endit
