Top political advisor underlines solidarity ahead of National Day

Xinhua, September 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The central government will remain faithful to the "one country, two systems" policy overarching Hong Kong and Macao affairs, top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng said Wednesday.

He also said the Chinese mainland will resolutely oppose and contain all forms of secessionist activities seeking "Taiwan independence."

Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks while addressing a reception attended by more over 2,800 representatives from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as overseas Chinese communities, to mark National Day that falls on Oct. 1.

He said the central authorities will continue to support the administration of the chief executives and governments of Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

Central authorities will support the two regions in developing their economies, improving the people's well-being, and promoting democracy and harmony, he said.

Meanwhile, regarding ties across the Taiwan Strait, Yu said the Chinese mainland will adhere to the political basis of the 1992 Consensus, uphold the one-China principle and resolutely oppose and contain all forms of secessionist activities.

The mainland will, nonetheless, continue to work to expand cross-Strait people-to-people exchanges, and promote social and economic integration across the Strait, Yu said.

The government will also continue to solidify cohesion among overseas Chinese, pool their strength and wisdom and protect their interests, he said. Endi
