Brunei initiates car-free Sundays in Bandar Seri Begawan

Xinhua, September 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brunei government will implement an unprecedented "car-free day" Sundays initiave starting Oct. 2.

In a press statement, the Municipal Department said roads in Bandar Seri Begawan will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. every Sunday to allow small vendors to do business, reduce carbon footprint and encourage healthy living.

Some roads will be closed to give space for cycling and running activities from October 2 onwards.

The initiative aims to turn Bandar Seri Begawan into a dynamic and vibrant city, the department said. Members of the public are encouraged to use the spaces available in the capital for recreation, cultural, family and community activities.

"Bandar Seri Begawan will become an urban park that can be enjoyed by all, through activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, aerobics and sales," it added.

The department said Bandar Seri Begawan was recently declared as the ASEAN City of Culture 2016-2017, providing an opportunity to showcase Brunei's cultural heritage. Endit
