Slovakia has contributed 50,000 euros (56,000 U.S. dollars) to the training of Libyan coast guard, Slovak Defence Minister Peter Gajdos said following an informal session of European Union defence ministers here on Tuesday.

Gajdos also said that Slovakia is ready to send its Military Police officers to serve in the Sophia naval operation in the Mediterranean Sea targeting the network of people smugglers.

"Slovakia, the Slovak Armed Forces and the Defence Ministry all have to be invested in the creation of armed forces and their modernisation. This way we can contribute, including the allotment of sufficient amount of financial resources," noted Gajdos, adding that Slovakia also participates in the ALTHEA operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Slovak defence minister also reported that Slovakia has entered into the Eastern Partnership Technical Assistance Trust Fund, which supports the participation of Eastern Partnership countries in activities involving the EU's common security and defence policies. Slovakia will contribute 20,000 euros (22,000 U.S. dollars) to the fund. Endit
