More than 70 percent of Chinese university students support premarital sex and 56 percent received sexual education, according to the results of a survey published Monday.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission and the China Family Planning Association announced the results of the survey at a sexual health event on Monday, which was also "World Contraception Day."
The survey covered over 130 universities, with 17,966 respondents.
Some 23.6 percent of respondents said there should be no sex before marriage under any circumstances, while 31.8 percent said premarital sex was acceptable as long as the couple were planning to get married.
Yao Ying, vice president of the association, said that 10.1 percent of the surveyed had experience of pregnancy and 3.2 percent experienced repeated pregnancies due to insufficient contraceptive methods.
China has about 300 million people aged between 10 and 24, accounting for one fifth of the total population, Yao said.
Education authorities at various levels are urged to provide students with more reproductive health materials and services, it added. Endi
