Spanish police detain two suspected jihadists

Xinhua, September 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish police have detained two suspected jihadists, the country's Interior Ministry confirmed on Monday.

One suspect was detained in Valladolid in central Spain while the other in Murcia in southeastern part of the country. Both of them are Moroccans, according to the ministry.

The man arrested in Valladolid had attempted to travel to Syria to join the ranks of DAESH, or Islamic State. He was self-radicalized after viewing jihadist propaganda on the Internet.

He failed to make his first trip when he was detained by Turkish police. After he returned to Spain, he contacted with the second suspect, while maintained "firm and single intention of joining the ranks of the terrorist organization," according to the Spanish Interior Ministry.

Both detainees shared jihadist ideals and protected each other, according to the ministry.

The arrests follow that of a secondary school teacher in Madrid, who was accused of spreading jihadist propaganda and making threats. Endit
