German star Alexander Zverev won his first career title on Sunday when he downed top seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the Saint Petersburg ATP final.
The 27th seed came into the final full of confidence after beating Czech Thomas Berdych on Saturday. In 39 minutes, he broke world number three Wawrinka's serve twice for a one set lead.
In the second set, Wawrinka also broke twice to level at one-all after one hour 22 minutes on court. However, the 19-year-old fifth seeded teenager broke back twice in the deciding set and claimed victory in two hours 23 minutes.
With the loss, US Open champion Wawrinka, who has won 11 of his previous appearances in the ATP finals, was blocked from capturing his 12th career title in Saint Petersburg.
"You're the future of tennis, but you're already at the top," the Swiss said in congratulating Zverev. Endit
