Schalke's negative run continued after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim while Cologne held newcomers Leipzig to a 1-1 draw to close the fifth round of the German Bundesliga on Sunday.

Schalke squandered a 1-0 lead at Hoffenheim and lost 2-1 to suffer the fifth defeat in as many games.

The visitors caught a fairy-tale start on the road as they caught Hoffenheim flat footed with four minutes into the game when Breel Embolo's cross into the box found Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who headed home the opener.

However, Hoffenheim remained unfazed and responded with the equalizer as Adrej Kramaric nodded in Pavel Kaderabek's cross to restore parity with 17 minutes into the game.

Things went from bad to worse for the "Royal Blues" after the woodwork denied Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's header on target before Lukas Rupp secured the victory 2-1 following an assist from Kerem Demirbay in the 41st minute.

In the second half, Hoffenheim remained a steady threat for Schalke's defense meanwhile the visitors were unable overcome Hoffenheim for a second time.

With the result, Hoffenheim secured their first win of the season while Schalke slumped to the Bundesliga bottom with zero points after five games.

"We started very well into the game but the lead did not gave us security," Schalke head coach Markus Weinzierl said. "We clearly have not implemented what we have planned."

Elsewhere, newcomers Leipzig and Cologne remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga season 2016-2017 as they shared the spoils following a 1-1 stalemate. Leipzig got up front in the 5th minute as Oliver Jasen Burke scored his maiden goal in Germany's top flight.

The "Billy Goats" bounced back and leveled the scores in the 25th minute when Yuya Osako slotted home from sharp angle to clinch one point on home soil.

"I think we have deserved to snatch one point here," Leipzig head coach Ralph Hasenhuettl said. "We have been a little bit closer to the win than Cologne." Endit
