Indian military chiefs call on Modi to discuss security situation

Xinhua, September 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indian military chiefs from army, air force and navy on Saturday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, India's official broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR)-- said.

"Army chief General Dalbir Singh, Air Force chief Marshal Arup Raha and vice chief of Naval Staff vice admiral Karambir Singh today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence," the broadcaster said. "During the meeting, discussions were held on prevailing security situation and India's response to Uri attacks."

Earlier this week, four gunmen stormed an Indian army base in frontier Uri town of Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing 18 troopers and wounding over 20 others. The attack considered to be the deadliest in recent past in the restive region has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.

New Delhi blames Islamabad for the attack and accuses Pakistan based militants of carrying it out. Indian politicians and retired military officials are demanding a strong reaction to the attack.

Pakistan, however, has strongly rejected the accusations of India and expressed concern at what it described the "vitriolic and unsubstantiated statements from India's civil and military leadership" in the aftermath of attack at Uri.

The Indian government and its top officials have been meeting continuously ever since the attack in a bid to plan its diplomatic and strategic response to the attack in Uri. Endit
