EU to support Albania's transport sector with 24 mln euros in three years

The European Union's further support to Albania's transport sector through the aid budget of 24 million euros (26.78 million U.S. dollars) is to be allocated over the next three years, EU ambassador to Tirana Romana Vlahutin said on Wednesday.

However, the funds would be awarded on the basis of the government's progress in achieving agreed upon results, Vlahutin told Albanian transport minister Sokol Dervishaj.

The EU ambassador stressed the need for further efforts towards aligning the Albanian legislation with that of the EU, and the development of a network of transport infrastructure that complied with investment priorities, the Albanian transport ministry informed in a press release.

The ministry statement also said Vlahutin urged the Albanian government to continue efforts to increase road safety which, in her view, remained a concern in the country.

Dervishaj highlighted that the transport ministry would continue to achieve investment projects, such as the completion of some main national road axes and increasing road safety.

The European Union has provided over 215 million euros for the transportation and water and sanitation systems under the instrument for pre-accession assistance one (IPA I) program from 2007 to 2013. Endit
