Armenia celebrates 25 years of independence

Xinhua, September 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Republic of Armenia held on Wednesday a series of activities across the country to celebrate its 25th anniversary of independence.

The main activities were held in the Republic Square, Yerevan, including a military parade to demonstrate the country's military potential.

A wide range of military equipment and technology was put on display, such as helicopters Mi-8 and Mi-24, multiple rocket launchers, operational-tactical missile complex, and a short-range ballistic missile system.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, Armenian Apostolic Church leader Karekin II, representatives of foreign missions in Armenia, and high-ranking officials attended the celebration, according to the country's state news agency Armenpress.

Armenia was once incorporated into the Soviet Union. The Republic of Armenia became independent in 1991 through a referendum, in which more than 90 percent of the population voted for independence.

Armenia was the second Southern Caucasus state declaring independence from the former Soviet Union after Georgia. Endi
