UN chief congratulates Brazil on successful hosting of Olympic Games

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday congratulated Brazil on the the successful conduct of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The congratulation came as the secretary-general was meeting with Brazilian President Michel Temer on the sidelines of the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which kicked off here Tuesday morning.

During the meeting, the UN chief expressed his best wishes to President Temer for his recently initiated tenure, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here.

Temer made his first presence at the United Nations as the Brazilian president since he was sworn in on Aug. 31.

The Secretary-General thanked Brazil for its long-standing support for UN peacekeeping, particularly the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), and for its leadership as Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission's Guinea-Bissau Configuration, the spokesman said.

The secretary-general and the president also exchanged views about climate change and the situation in Syria, Dujarric added. Endit
