Ukraine rejects results of Russia's parliamentary elections

Xinhua, September 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday passed a resolution rejecting the results of Sunday's elections of the lower house of the Russian parliament, saying the results were "illegitimate."

"The Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament) does not recognize the legitimacy of the elections to the 7th State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia, their results and legal consequences," said a statement on the Ukrainian parliament's website.

According to the statement, the resolution was adopted because certain lawmakers have been elected to the Russian parliament in Crimea.

Commenting on the resolution, Volodymyr Ariev, chairman of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said it means that any decision adopted by the 7th State Duma of Russia would not be recognized in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's opposition has denounced the adoption the resolution as a "pointless move," which distracts the parliament from solving the problems of the country.

The autonomous republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol were absorbed into Russia in March 2014 following a referendum, which was recognized by Moscow but rejected by Kiev and Western powers. Endi
