Albania planning to cut energy consumption by 8 pct by 2018

Xinhua, September 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

In the framework of European Union directives on energy efficiency, Albania has set a new objective to cut electric energy consumption by 8 percent, local media reported, citing government sources on Monday.

To achieve this, Albania has prepared a draft law which foresees undertaking effective measures to reduce energy consumption in dwellings through investments focused on energy saving.

The new draft law on energy performance in buildings is being discussed in parliamentary committees.

Referring to the accompanying report of this draft law, Albania foresees that by 2020, after implementing this project, it will be able to save 8.4 billion Lek (70 million U.S. dollars) in electrical consumption and 3.4 billion Lek in electrical generation, local media said.

According to the new draft law, part of the energy efficiency project is expected to be applied to public and private buildings, stipulating that all buildings should have an energy performance certificate.

The bill also makes it mandatory that any reconstruction or new construction should apply the methodology, otherwise, sanctions will range from 200,000 to 300,000 Lek. (1 U.S. dollar = 123 Albanian Lek) Endit
