The Syrian army started withdrawing from the strategic Castello highway in the northern province of Aleppo on Thursday, a military source told Xinhua.

Heavy military gears and vehicles have started to withdraw, with a small number of soldiers left till the Syrian army's positions there are fully handed over to the Russian forces, the source said on condition of anonymity. (Syria-Castello Highway-Withdrawal)

KIEV -- The number of people killed in the 29-month conflict in eastern Ukraine has climbed to 9,640, the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights said in a report on Thursday.

The document also suggested that at least 22,431 civilians, government soldiers and members of the armed groups were injured in the conflict zone since mid-April 2014. (Ukraine-Conflict)

BAGHDAD -- At least two people were killed and 13 others wounded on Thursday in two bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

A roadside bomb ripped through a marketplace in Shaab district in northeastern Baghdad, leaving two people killed and five wounded, the source said on condition of anonymity. (Iraq-Bomb Attack)

CARACAS -- The Venezuelan government on Thursday extended a state of economic emergency that allows the president to rule by decree.
