Greek central banker's residence searched by prosecutors

Xinhua, September 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Anti-corruption prosecutors searched the residence of Greece's central banker Yannis Stournaras to probe into the alleged mismanagement of state funds with the involvement of his wife's company, Greek national news agency AMNA reported on Thursday.

According to sources, documents and electronic files were confiscated during the raid.

The probe concerns alleged mismanagement of some two million euros of state funds in the period 2011-2013 by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO).

KEELPNO is accused of wasting public funds on advertising companies for the campaigns to inform the public of health issues, such as the seasonal flu. But as public service messages, such advertisements could be broadcast without any charge.

The company owned by Stournaras's wife Stavroula Nikolopoulou was among the firms who received such funds.

Thursday's raid was carried out as Stournaras was addressing a seminar of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on the debt crisis and the ways to restore growth.(1 euro = 1.13 U.S. dollars) Endit
