Albanian first grade enrollment sees drastic drop

Xinhua, September 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nearly 50 percent fewer first grade pupils were enrolled in schools this year in Albania, compared to the number 10 years ago, Albanian official statistics showed Thursday.

According to data published by the institute of statistics, Albania had around 60,000 first grade pupils in 2006 while ten years later, thus in 2016, the number has dropped to 27,000.

The figure showed that the concern about aging population has also affected Albania.

Experts attributed the aging population to the decrease of birth rates and migration.

Institute of Statistics reported recently that in recent 10 years, the number of births in one year has declined by 6,000.

In 2005, the birth rate in Albania was almost 39,000 while in 2015 the number marked a significant decline to around 33,000 births, the statistics showed.

In addition, experts said that the citizens in Albania are getting married at an older age. Endit
