OSCE forum focuses on role of good governance in maintaining security, stability

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Economic and Environmental Forum kicked off on Wednesday, with delegates to focus discussion on the role of good governance in maintaining security and stability during the three-day event.

More than 200 delegates from 57 countries, nongovernmental organisations and other institutions take part in the conference that will also deal with fighting corruption and money laundering related to support for terrorism, environmental affairs and migration.

In the opening speech, Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said responsible, transparent, impartial and efficient institutions can help the prevention of violence and terrorism.

He said good governance is essential for the stability, security and prosperity and if it is strengthened at the national level and shared with good practice, then it is meaningful.

He supported the idea of an active participation of civic society and the public in governance.

Zaoralek said the Czech Republic wants to promote good governance and the principles of impartiality, responsibility, transparency, effectiveness, competency, integrity and equality also in the United Nations as one of the vice-presiding countries of the UN Economic and Social Council.

OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier said migration led to a U-turn in European policy. According to him, it ought to be shown that migration is not only mean the risk, on the contrary, they can bring economic profit.

Prague is the traditional seat of the Economic and Environmental Forum of the OSCE. Themed "Enhancing stability and security through cooperation in good governance," the event is held under the auspices of the German chairmanship of OSCE. Endit
