The following are highlights of South African major news outlets on Monday.
-- Business and labour are being urged from within their own ranks to take a stand against President Jacob Zuma, who is increasingly viewed as responsible for the loss of confidence in the government and the African National Congress (ANC).
The moves, originating simultaneously from opposite sides of the political spectrum, indicate that Zuma is under siege and that his time as president could end earlier than the 2019 election. (Business Day)
-- There has been a significant increase in the number of arrests of alleged rhino poachers this year, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Sunday.
In a report on progress made in the implementation of the Integrated Strategic Management of Rhinoceros for the period May 1 to August 31, she said 414 alleged poachers had been arrested in South Africa since January 1 - of which 177 were in the Kruger National Park (KNP) and 237 for the rest of the country.(African News Agency)
-- Harmony Gold Mining and White Rivers Exploration said they found a major gold deposit in South Africa's Free State that could lead to one of the country's first new mines for the metal in the last 25 years.
The resource contains 11.5 million ounces of gold at a grade of 8.9 grams per tonne of ore, White Rivers said in an e-mailed statement. Mining would take place 1.1 kilometers to 2.2 kilometers below ground, next to Harmony's Target mine, it said. The project is 65 percent owned by White Rivers and 35 percent by Harmony.(Fin24) Endit
