China's Dong defends Paralympic 10m air rifle SH1 title

Xinhua, September 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

China's Dong Chao successfully defended his Paralympic 10m air rifle standing SH1 title here on Thursday by holding off Abdullah Sultan Alaryani of the United Arab Emirates.

Dong secured the gold medal with 205.8 points, beating Alaryani by just 3.2 points. South Korea's Kim Suwan took bronze with 181.7 points.

"This medal was not easy and I think I was very lucky. It was very close," Dong said.

"It's my first time competing in South America. I tried my best to adjust to the time difference. I had heard about football and the friendly people here in Brazil, so I'm very happy to be here. I will be supporting the Chinese team, but I would love to see Christ the Redeemer and the beaches."

The 30-year-old, who also won gold in the event at the London 2012 Games, said concentration was the key to his victory.

"I got gold again after London, which is good. It is about your own condition and own performance and your own focus.

"My family will be happy, but for them it is not about me winning a gold. If I did not win gold they would still be very happy with my participation."

Dong's left leg was amputated after was hit by a car when aged three. Endit
