Gambia expects 900,000 voters for December presidential election

The Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that about 900,000 voters are to participate in the presidential election scheduled for Dec. 1, local media reported.

The total number registered during the supplementary registration was 89,649 and the number of voters now stands at 886,578 as opposed to 796,929 in 2011, Alieu Momar Njai, IEC chairman confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Njai, the number of polling stations is 1,422 compared with 1,300 in 2011.

The West african nation has a population of 1.8 million, with 53 constituencies across the country.

Gambia is preparing for both presidential and parliamentary elections this year, with so far 9 presidential candidates confirmed by the IEC. Endit
