Arctic development put on agenda of Russian government

Xinhua, September 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The development of Russia's Arctic area bordering countries including the United States and Denmark is top on the agenda of a government meeting attended by President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, according to the Kremlin press service.

"On the agenda the main topic will be the development of the Russian Federation's Arctic zone. It is also planned to consider several relevant issues," it said.

Putin has earlier said it is among Moscow's new priorities to explore and develop Russia's Far North while keeping up the local natural environment and historical and cultural heritages.

Russia's Arctic area borders the United States, Canada, Norway and the Greenland of Denmark. It covers lands including Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions, autonomous districts of Nenets, Chukotka and Yamal-Nenets, and some parts of the Komi and Yakutia republics.

The some 3-million-sq-km area accounts for 18 percent of Russia's territory with a population of over 2.5 million, or less than 2 percent of Russia's total and around 40 percent of the Arctic's total. Endi
