Ghana to make 21st appearance at Africa cup of nations

Xinhua, September 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana has qualified to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be staged in Gabon next year.

The 2017 AFCON will be Ghana's national team's 21st appearance since the inception of the continental soccer fiesta in 1957.

The Black Stars last Saturday drew 1-1 with Rwanda in the final group qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, with young attacker Samuel Tetteh scoring his debut goal for the West Africans.

Ghana, silver medalists at the 2015 edition of the tournament, qualified as group leaders with 14 points from six games, with an unbeaten record.

Ghana will know its Group opponents for the 2017 AFCON when the draw is held in Gabonese capital of Libreville on October 19 as the Black Stars seeks to end a trophy drought since 1982.

The Black Stars is expected to be among the top seeds considering its current position on the FIFA/CAF rankings.

The 2017 cup of nations will kick off in January. Endit
