Austrian state of Carinthia under emergency following turbulent weather

Xinhua, September 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Heavy rain, hail, and mudslides in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia have led to emergency situations in some areas, local media reported on Monday.

The turbulent weather begun on Sunday afternoon, with some residents receiving early warnings of the conditions on their cell phones, though were not in all instances prepared for the severity of what was to come.

The Afritz am See municipality was subsequently particularly hard-hit, with houses having to be evacuated due to flooding and mudslides.

About 100 residents managed to do so on their own, while six reportedly had to be transported out via helicopter, the Krone reported.

Further complications have arisen due to mudslides having damaged water pipelines, leading to parts of the municipality being without drinking water. This has had to be transported in from the nearby city of Villach.

Food and tea supplies have also been made available for the residents at the local community centre.

It is as yet uncertain when residents will be able to move back in to their homes, the effects of the weather having left significant damage in some areas. Endit
