European Parliament to assess British candidate for Security Union Commissioner

Xinhua, September 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Parliament will evaluate Commissioner-designate Julian King for the portfolio of the security union during its plenary session in Strasbourg mid-September, according to a press released issued Friday on the Parliament's website.

The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee will first hold a public hearing with the candidate on Sept. 12. The full House will then take a vote on Sept. 15.

King's candidacy was put forward by the UK government following the resignation of Jonathan Hill, who held the financial services portfolio. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced last month that he intended to allocate the newly-created security union portfolio to the new UK commissioner.

As Commissioner for the security union, King would support the implementation of the European security agenda and contribute to delivering an operational and effective security union.

The hearing before the Civil Liberties Committee will last three hours. Committee coordinators will assess the outcome of the hearing on Sept. 13. Endit
