Al Ahli loan Ghana skipper Gyan from Shanghai SIPG

Xinhua, September 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has joined Arabian Gulf League champions Al Ahli on a one-year loan deal from Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

The attacker returns to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) just 12 months after signing for Shanghai SIPG where he failed to meet the huge expectations chiefly due to recurring injuries that kept him away from playing at 100 percent.

Ahli, nicknamed the Red Knights, winners of the 2015/2016 Arabian Gulf League, is a fierce rival of Al Ain, where Gyan spent four productive years between 2012 and mid-2015.

The 30-year-old scored 128 goals in 123 matches for Al Ain, making him an instant league legend.

He won three league titles, scoring 95 goals in 83 league matches in a four-year period.

In 2014, Gyan won the Asian Champions League top scorer award with 12 goals.

"The move will be controversial because of the heated nature of games between the two sides but the Ghana captain will relish it," said a statement on the players' website.

Gyan is Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 48 goals in over 90 appearances. Endit
