Austria sees record number of deportations to August

Xinhua, September 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austria has deported 1,253 persons up to Aug. 24 this year to set a record level, the Krone newspaper reported Wednesday.

The figures come largely on the back of the return of denied asylum seekers, such as 18 persons who were transported by bus from Vienna to Poland on Wednesday as per the Dublin Convention regulations.

The total by Aug. 24 is almost as many as the 1,299 that were deported for the entire year in 2015. In 2014 the total was 1,327 persons, and in 2013 1,181 persons.

Director of the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA) Wolfgang Taucher said he was aware of the record number that had been reached.

He also noted that the Austrian asylum system could "only be credible if the return of persons who cannot stay in Austria is also enforced."

Taucher also said a goal for his office for the remainder of the year is to carry out "a successful charter every week." Endit
