Kenya captain Wanyama roots for Uganda to qualify for Africa Cup

Xinhua, August 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

With Kenya missing out on the Africa Nations Cup finals next year, captain Victor Wanyama has said he expects Uganda to carry the east African flag in the final in Gabon.

Kenya spoiled Uganda's chances of breaking a three decade jinx two years ago, but they were separated in the 2017 campaign and with Harambee Stars out of the picture for the finals, Wanyama wants Uganda to take the baton and deliver the result.

"To be fair to them, I want Uganda to have the group ticket," said Wanyama on return to Nairobi Wednesday after Harambee Stars held Uganda to a 0-0 draw in Kampala on Tuesday.

"I believe they (Cranes) have come of age and with so many experienced players who have been playing at this stage at least for the last four campaigns. There are also young boys who are hungry to make a name for themselves."

Uganda, a notable absentee from the final tournament of the showpiece continental championship since 1978, are just a win away from breaking that jinx as they face Comoros in a Group D Day 6 clash on Sept. 4 in Kampala.

Tied on 10 points with Burkina Faso, the maximum points will guarantee Uganda a place at the final tournament either as winner of the group or as one of the best runner-ups.

The Cranes face Comoros on Sunday in Kampala while Harambee Stars will be in Nairobi to play against Zambia.

"We are brothers and there should be no reason to wish them well. They need to keep it calm and tight and hopefully secure the win. It will be a good for everyone," said Wanyama, who plays as a midfielder for Tottenham in the English Premier League.

Kenya are already out of the Africa Nations Cup finals qualification as they occupy last place in Group E with four points after five games. Zambia, Guinea Bissau and Congo are the other teams in the group.

"Football in this region is underrated because we have failed to qualify for major tournaments. Occasionally, Sudan or Ethiopia, will qualify but Uganda has always been close. Hopefully they make it this time. We will support them," said the 25-year-old Wanyama. Endit
