National University of Singapore ranks 11th among Asia's most innovative universities

The National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked the 11th place in Reuters Top 75: Asia's Most Innovative Universities, said NUS in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the Top 75 list, NUS is the highest ranked educational institution outside of Northeast Asia, and is also the only university in Singapore among the list's top 15.

The list recognizes Asian universities for their commitment to research, innovation and protection of ideas, as well as commercialization of those discoveries.

Using data from Intellectual Property (IP) and Science division of Thomson Reuters, the ranking analyzes scientific literature and patent data across 10 criteria from 2009 to 2014 to determine which Asian academic institutions are the most innovative. The ranking factors in academic papers, patent filings and commercializing its discoveries.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan noted that the ranking is a strong endorsement of the university as a research powerhouse and a center of innovation in Asia.

"We place strong emphasis on pioneering innovations and enhancing the translational impact of our research for the benefit of Singapore and beyond," add Tan.

Reuters' ranking identifies educational institutions that are doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and help drive the global economy. Out of the top 20 universities, 17 are based in Japan and South Korea. Endit
