Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday vowed to support efforts aimed at stabilizing South Sudan that has suffered more than two years of conflict.
Speaking to journalists after holding talks with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir in Juba, Kenyatta called on the transitional unity government to accelerate the implementation of the peace deal as the path to ensure stability and prosperity of the conflict-hit nation.
The talks between the two leaders focused on the current situation in the country and Kenyatta encouraged the South Sudanese government to work for peace and implement reforms enshrined in the August 2015 peace pact.
"Stability in South Sudan is the key ingredient for the prosperity that we wished for the people of South Sudan," he said.
President Kenyatta urged President Kiir to spare no efforts in ensuring that the people of South Sudan are spared the agony of endless conflicts.
Speaking at the joint news conference, Kiir praised Kenyatta's state visit as an important aspect to bring peace in South Sudan, adding that calm has returned to Juba following the July 8 clashes that killed hundreds and displaced thousands.
"For president Uhuru to come to Juba as the first Head of State after our crisis shows that the regional leadership is with us and is very concerned about the situation in South Sudan," Kiir Said.
Kenyatta also called on regional countries to unite for peace to steer socio-economic development and prosperity. Endit
