Armenia police announces detention of Russian citizen wanted by U.S.

Xinhua, August 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Armenian police announced on Monday the detention of a Russian citizen, Sergey Mironov, wanted by the United States for a number of offenses.

According to a statement issued by the police, Mironov, 30, was detained at the Yerevan airport on Friday evening, although no official information was released regarding the detention by any side until Monday despite a number of reports from foreign media.

The statement mentioned that Mironov was wanted by the United States for alleged violations of the U.S. criminal code, including money laundering and illegal technology transfer.

According to the police, the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Armenia and the General Prosecutor's Office have been notified of Mironov's detention.

It is expected that an Armenian court will soon hear the case for the extradition of Mironov to the United States, though it was not mentioned in the official announcement by the Armenian police.

Earlier on the weekend, a representative of the Russian Embassy to Armenia had told the local press that "the Embassy was dealing with the issue."

Armenia is a close ally of Russia and many people are anxiously waiting to see how the situation will unfold. Endi
