Augsburg's Esswein joins Hertha Berlin

Xinhua, August 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Hertha Berlin have signed midfielder Alexander Esswein from league rivals Augsburg, the "Herthaner" announced on Friday.

Berlin strengthened their midfield with the transfer of Esswein, who penned a four-year deal, stipulated until June 2020.

"Alexander was our desired candidate," Berlin's sporting director Michael Preetz said. "I am very happy that the transfer worked out, and he became a Herthaner."

The 26-year-old summer signing, who received the jersey No. 7, played since January 2014 for Augsburg, where he provided seven assists and four goals in 61 appearances.

"I had a great time at Augsburg but I am looking for a new challenge at Berlin now," Esswein told the club's official homepage.

His new club encounters newly promoted Freiburg at the closer of the first round in Bundesliga on Sunday. Enditem
