Singapore offers condolences over earthquake in C. Italy

Singaporean leaders have written letters to their Italian counterparts to offer condolences over the earthquake in central Italy on Wednesday, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Thursday.

Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam wrote to Italian President Sergio Mattarella, saying he was "deeply saddened" by the tragic loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the earthquake.

President Tan extended the deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the disaster on behalf of the people of Singapore. "I wish for the speedy recovery of those who were injured," added President Tan. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Italy during this difficult period."

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote to his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi to convey his condolences. Lee said he "was saddened" to learn of the earthquake in central Italy.

"I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and those affected by the disaster," said Lee in the letter.

A major earthquake hit the central region of Italy on Wednesday, leaving 159 people dead and at least 368 people injured so far. Endit
