Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay boycott Mercosur meeting

A meeting of national coordinators of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in Montevideo on Wednesday called by Venezuela was boycotted by Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, which refuse to recognize Venezuela's presidency of the group.

Of the five member countries, only Uruguay and Venezuela attended.

Venezuela was supposed to assume the rotating presidency of the bloc for the second half of 2016, but some members countries claim that Venezuela has failed to meet the requirements for membership.

At a press conference, Venezuelan representative Hector Constat said his country had the legal right to hold the presidency.

On Tuesday, the Mercosur coordinators from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Montevideo, aiming to relieve the rising tension among members of the bloc. However, Venezuela did not attend the meeting. Endi
