Tokyo shares close lower on cheap oil prices, Fed chief speech awaited

Tokyo shares closed lower Thursday as as market sentiment was dampened by U.S. shares losses on weak oil prices overnight, and the investors kept cautious awaiting upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's speech.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 41.35 points, or 0.25 percent, from Wednesday at 16,555.95.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 2.44 points, or 0.19 percent, lower at 1,304.27.

Decliners were led by nonferrous metal, oil and coal product, and mining issues.

The day's turnover was about 1,712.1 billion yen (around 17.04 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
