U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday offered his "deepest" condolences on behalf of the American people to the people of Italy after a devastating earthquake struck central Italy overnight.

The death toll in the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked the Italian city of Rieti at 3:32 a.m. Wednesday (0132 GMT) has risen to 120, according to Italy's civil protection agency.

In a telephone talk with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Obama saluted the quick action of first responders and volunteers who have been working to save lives, said a statement issued by the White House.

Reaffirming the "strong bonds of friendship" between the United States and Italy, Obama underscored that the United States stands ready to provide any assistance needed during this difficult time, said the statement. Endit
