Palestinian killed after stabbing soldier in West Bank: Israeli army

Xinhua, August 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Israel's army said troops shot and killed a Palestinian after he allegedly tried to stab soldiers in the West Bank on Wednesday.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that the incident occurred after soldiers chased a Palestinian vehicle that was involved in stone hurling near the settlement of Itzhar, south of the city of Nablus.

"At the end of the chase, one of the passengers stepped out of the vehicle and stabbed a soldier," the statement read.

The Palestinian was subsequently shot dead, the spokesperson said.

The Israeli soldier sustained light injuries, according to the spokesperson.

Since mid-September, an outburst of violence has killed at least 220 Palestinians and 34 Israelis.

Israeli leaders accuse the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the unrest, while the Palestinians say it is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, home to more than five million Palestinians, where they wish to establish their state.
