Namibian soccer loses 1.76 mln USD sponsorship

Namibia Premier League was left in the cold on Monday after its sole and biggest sponsor, the Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) pulled out of the 15 million Namibia dollars (1.1 million US dollars) deal.
The mobile company did not renew the three-year contract that expired at the end of May 2016.
This year, the premier league had asked the mobile operator for about 24 million Namibian dollars (1.76 million dollars) per year but was asked to source the remainder 9 million Namibian dollars (660,000 dollars) before the contract was renewed.
Announcing the cancelation of the deal in Windhoek, the mobile company's spokesperson Tim Ekandjo said the premier league failed to source the 9 million Namibia dollar, so they decided not to renew the sponsorship agreement.
"This move now formally means that MTC will officially not renew its partnership with the NPL. We wish to assure the public that MTC will remain a credible and enthusiastic partner not just of football but sports in Namibia. Our intention is to reinvest all funds meant for the NPL in other sports codes," he said.
Despite the cancelation of sponsorship, the premier league chairperson Johnny Doeseb said they will still go ahead with the games in September this year.
Doeseb said they have approached the sports ministry for help.
"They said our request was not budgeted for, as they don't have reserves but they will make a provision with the Ministry of Finance," he said. Endit
